Buff Kavelman to Serve on 2017 New York Community Trust Nonprofit Excellence Awards Selection Committee

Buff Kavelman has been invited to serve on the 2017 Selection Committee for the New York Community Trust Nonprofit Excellence Awards. The Awards program recognizes nonprofit organizations with outstanding management and governance based on the Eight Key Areas of Nonprofit Excellence.

The Eight Key Areas of Nonprofit Excellence are nationally recognized management areas critical to an organization’s success:
1. Overall management focus
2. Governance
3. Financial management
4. Diversity and Inclusion
5. Human resource development
6. Effective use of information technology
7. Communications; and
8. Fundraising.

Buff enjoyed serving on the 2016 Selection Committee. Through a rigorous and intensive vetting process, three winners were selected: Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services; Neighbors Link; and Per Scholas. New York City Outward Bound Schools, New York Peace Institute, and The Children’s Aid Society were selected as finalists.

The gold prizewinner, Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, works in the five boroughs of New York City to strengthen families and communities. The Jewish Board provides health and human services for all New Yorkers, including counseling and mental health services. Founded over 140 years ago, the Jewish Board has impacted the lives of over 40,000 individuals and families and serves as the largest social services agency in the State of New York.

Neighbors Link, the silver prizewinner, strengthens the whole community through the healthy integration of immigrants. Serving Westchester County, Neighbors Link provides programs that range from English as a Second Language education, employment raining, health and legal referrals, parent education, early childhood programs to academic support for school-age children.

The bronze medal winner, Per Scholas, is an organization that opens doors to transformative technology careers for individuals from often overlooked communities by creating opportunities and providing skills development training. Based in New York, Per Scholas currently operates in Atlanta, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dallas and Washington D.C.

Celebrating their 10th year, the Nonprofit Excellence Awards are the only awards of their kind recognizing and inspiring excellence in nonprofit management in the New York metropolitan region.
