International Grantmaking: Applying Ethics to Practice

On June 14th, Buff Kavelman joined a group of distinguished philanthropic advisors and experts to moderate a funders’ briefing, “A Moment for International Grantmaking: Applying Ethics to Practice.” Organized by Philanthropy New York’s International Grantmakers Network co-chair Patricia Moore Nicholas, the program examined how ethical principles, partnerships, and practices guide cross-border philanthropy.

Patricia L. Rosenfield served as the event’s guest of honor and keynote speaker. Rosenfield is a noted expert in international philanthropy, with more than four decades in leadership positions as a grantmaker and scholar at institutions such as the Carnegie Corporation, the World Health Organization, the Ford Foundation, and the Rockefeller Archive Center. She is also president of the Herbert and Audrey Rosenfield Fund and serves on the boards of the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and Borough of Manhattan Community College Foundation.

Pat Nicholas, International Program Officer at the Carnegie Corporation, Cordell Brown, Vice President, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and Radhika Nayar, Director, Arabella Advisors, each engaged in a dialogue with Patricia Rosenfield. The discussions considered a range of value-driven practices to support truly robust and equal partnerships across locations and cultures. They also took into consideration how to leverage these values and mutual understanding to build sustainable, long-term global philanthropic relationships. Funders attending this briefing engaged with the speakers and shared their own experiences.

A Moment for International Grantmaking: Applying Ethics to Practice was presented in partnership with the Network of Engaged International Donors.
